During Prohibition, Dawson County was known for its backwoods moonshine, which was smuggled into Atlanta through an
intricate network of bootleggers and mountainous backroads. Although few unpaved thoroughfares still exist in Dawson County, its highways and wooded roads lead to scenic vistas, local stock car racing, extensive outlet malls, and the largest collection of kangaroos outside of Australia.
About an hour north of Atlanta, along Highway 400, Dawson County boasts some of the most beautiful outdoor recreation areas in the state, from the beginning of the Appalachian Trail at Springer Mountain to Georgia's 729-foot Amicalola Falls, Like Sidney Lanier and the Kangaroo Conservation Center. For those who prefer racing to hiking, Dawson is also home to Thunder Road USA, which houses Georgia's Official Motorsports Hall of Fame.
With so many attractions to choose from, Dawson County is becoming a popular place to visit for the day, or stay a lifetime. It is currently ranked among the top 15 fastest growing counties in the United States. Although nearly a fifth of its population is school-age children, the area is also home to an increasing number of retirees and new home communities.
