Located in west central Georgia on the Georgia-Alabama state line, Carroll County is an area rich in both beauty and history. With Atlanta approximately 45 miles away, residents can experience the conveniences of the city while enjoying a country lifestyle. Named for Charles Carroll, who was the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence, the county was formed by land acquired from a treaty with the Creek Indians in 1826.
When the county land was distributed in a lottery McIntosh Reserve, was withheld. Today, McIntosh Reserve is a 487-acre park popular for camping, hiking and picnicking. It's also the site of the annual McIntosh Festival, a two-day event commemorating McIntosh's colorful life through arts, and crafts, a road race and other entertainment. Another popular recreation spot is John Tanner State park, located just south of Mt. Zion. The park features the largest sand beach of any state park in Georgia, along with two lakes, nature trails, canoe and paddle boat rentals and miniature golf.
Agriculture plays a vital role in the county-it has the state's largest Cattlemen's Association and the largest Poultry Association. The county also has more than 100 manufactures, including six international firms. Major employers include Southwire, Tanner Medical Center, the State University of West Georgia and Gold Kist.
The county is served by two school districts, one for the city of Carrollton and one for the county at large. Thereare also five Private Schools in the county.
